Better Cotton Initiative

BCI exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in
and better for the sector's future.

BCI exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector's future. The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) project aims to improve cotton production by way of a scientific package of practices and the integration of a value chain from production to market. Taken up as a pilot program, the Deshpande Foundation strives to implement these practices to help a large number of cotton farmers in Medak and Karimnagar. These practices will allow the farmers to become more productive and fetch better prices for cotton products in the market. The BCI pilot project embodies these production principles by encouraging farmers to use fewer but more quality inputs and efficient practices.

How Do We Make It Work?

This project is comprised of various objectives including:

Leveraging public/private partnership funds to encourage farmers improvement.

Using measurable, output driven methodology to intervene in seasonal learning cycles and subsequent monitoring.

Integrating cotton farmers locally and globally to give them access to supplies and open forums to exchange the best practices to scale up collective action.

Knowing that cotton is one of the major crops in the Medak and Karimnagar, this pilot project goes a long way to add to the foundation needed to scale good practices in farming. The project also gives us the background to promote useful agriculture policies for the benefit of farmers.
